Recently in Mumbai, I booked an OLA cab. At the very first look, the driver impressed me with his decent smart English words, tip-top Jeans, branded T-shirt, costly sunglass, snicker shoe and with a new car. On enquiry, I came to know to my surprise that he is a software engineer and working as a 'team leader' in one globally famous Software company. His wife is also a software engineer and daughter is studying in a reputed school in Mumbai, which is eventually very costly too.

I asked him how was the profit going on but he could not say the same as he told that those days he was driving the cab only between 4 hours a day, 7am-11am. Then to satisfy my interest, he opened up saying that he wanted to start his own business as entrepreneur (OLA was selected as he could look after OLA cab business without disturbing his software job). First, he understood OLA business theoretically from his friends who are having OLA cabs. Then he took leave from his job and drove OLA cab as ordinary driver for 15 days to have firsthand on-road business experience with OLA cab. After satisfactorily experiencing the business as a driver (without risking his own money in the beginning), he invested money on the car and started the business, but driving by himself only for 4 hours a day for the first month ( software job was adjusted in 2pm-10pm slot) to understand the fuel consumption and other business issues. Afterwards, he will hire salaried drivers for running the cab commercially for whole day and he will only monitor the business. What a step by step strategic approach for starting and learning a new business ! What a courage to work 15 days as a whole-day cab-driver on the road when they both husband & wife are well settled as software engineers !!

On enquiry, this man told me that though he and his wife are very keen to built their own business ( which will have chance of growing in many dimension for the growth of the family) and both of them together took this venture. I have not met any senior software specialist who is ready to work as cab driver, for learning new business. Hats off to his wife too who gladly allowed him to do so ( not even bothered about what relatives, colleagues, society will think !!) and eventually used to give her husband 2-3 boxes full of different snacks / lunch during the driving days, as they were jointly planning their family business. Jokingly at the last the man said, ‘Sir I am from a maroari family and my wife belongs too from maroari family !’.
